What is the ACT?

The ACT is an alternative to the SAT for US undergraduate admissions. It tests English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing section. All US colleges accept both SAT and ACT scores equally.

ACT Test Format

English

45 minutes, 75 questions. Grammar, punctuation, and rhetorical skills.

Mathematics

60 minutes, 60 questions. Pre-algebra through trigonometry.

Reading

35 minutes, 40 questions. Four passages from different subject areas.

Science

35 minutes, 40 questions. Data interpretation, research summaries, conflicting viewpoints.

ACT Score Requirements

ACT scores range from 1-36 (composite average of all sections). Competitive universities expect 28+. Ivy League averages are 33-35. The ACT is particularly good for students strong in science.
