What is the GRE?

The GRE is a standardized test required for admission to many graduate programs worldwide, especially in the USA. Administered by ETS, it measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

GRE Test Structure

Verbal Reasoning

Two sections, 27 questions each. Tests reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. Score: 130-170.

Quantitative Reasoning

Two sections, 27 questions each. Tests arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Score: 130-170.

Analytical Writing

Two tasks: Analyze an Issue and Analyze an Argument. Score: 0-6 in half-point increments.

GRE Score Requirements

Most competitive graduate programs in the US expect combined Verbal + Quant scores of 310-330+. Top programs at MIT, Stanford, and Harvard often have average scores above 325. Engineering programs typically value higher Quant scores (165+).
