Student Visa Updates 2025: Latest Changes for USA, UK, Canada & Australia

Master Visa | Visa Updates

Visa policies change frequently, and staying updated is crucial for Indian students planning to study abroad. Here are the latest visa updates for the most popular study destinations in 2025.

USA: F-1 Visa Updates

The US continues to be the top destination for Indian students. Recent updates include streamlined visa processing with reduced wait times at many Indian consulates, the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program remains at 12 months with a 24-month STEM extension, and increased focus on demonstrating strong ties to home country during visa interviews. Students are advised to schedule visa appointments early as slots fill up quickly during peak season (April-July).

UK: Graduate Route Visa

The UK Graduate Route visa allows international students to stay and work for 2 years after completing their degree (3 years for PhD graduates). This remains one of the UK’s strongest selling points. Recent updates include faster processing times for student visa applications, updated financial requirements — students must show £1,334 per month for London and £1,023 per month outside London, and CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) requirements have been streamlined.

Canada: Study Permit Changes

Canada has introduced significant changes to its international student program. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) for Indian students offers faster processing. New rules require students to declare their study level when applying. Post-graduation work permits (PGWP) continue to be available for up to 3 years. Financial proof requirements have been updated — students need to show CAD 20,635 in addition to first year tuition.

Australia: Student Visa Subclass 500

Australia has made several important updates for international students. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement has been replaced with Genuine Student (GS) test, post-study work rights range from 2-4 years depending on your qualification, and work hour limits during term time have been updated. Students now need to demonstrate a genuine intention to study and sufficient financial capacity.

What This Means for Indian Students

The overall trend across all major destinations is positive for Indian students. Work opportunities during and after studies remain strong, processing times are improving, and new pathways to permanent residency continue to open up. The key is to stay informed and prepare your application with the latest requirements in mind.
